Developing your policies
You don’t need to start from scratch. Many organisations adapt sample documents or templates to fit their own context. Here are some of the most essential policies to consider:
- Health and Safety Policy
Required by law if you employ five or more people.
Guidance is available from the Health and Safety Executive
- Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy
This policy should outline your stance on discrimination and harassment and how you promote an inclusive environment for all stakeholders
- Financial Controls and Procedures
Sets out how your organisation manages its finances to ensure transparency and prevent misuse of funds
- Safeguarding Policy
Vital if you work with children or vulnerable adults. This document outlines how your organisation protects those it serves
- Data Protection Policy
Explains how you handle personal data in line with legal requirements, covering both staff and service users. This can be a standalone policy or part of a broader set
- Grievance and Disciplinary Procedures
Outlines how complaints, disputes, and staff conduct issues are addressed fairly and consistently
- Employment Policies
If you have employees – or plan to – you’ll need a range of employment-related policies to support legal compliance and good practice.
