Just as Ofgem announced that the average energy bill is set to rise by £111 this April, a new report has revealed the ongoing struggle many of us face in affording our energy costs.
In 2024, a record number of people sought help with energy debt. To better understand how households are coping this winter, a nationwide survey was conducted. The findings are alarming:
- 30% of people—that’s over 8 million households—are struggling to afford their energy bills.
- 1 in 10 people are in debt to their energy supplier, meaning 6.7 million people are already behind on payments.
- Nearly two-thirds (63%) of those in energy debt have had to ration their energy—turning off heating or hot water just to make ends meet.
Real-life case studies from affected households highlight the human cost of these rising bills, making it clear that targeted bill support is needed more than ever.
There is some good news—the government recently announced plans to extend the Warm Home Discount scheme to all households on means-tested benefits. This is a step in the right direction and could provide vital relief for almost 3 million more households.
But it’s still not enough. Additional support is crucial, particularly for families with children and those with the highest energy needs. A more generous, tiered system for energy support is needed to prevent millions from falling further into financial hardship.
