Maria’s Update, March 2025

I met with Hannah Lant from Barclays. Part of Hannah’s work is to bring communities together and at present her focus is on fraud and scam awareness but also budgeting and money skills for all ages.  She can deliver in house chats/discussions and also support local schools with Schools Roadshows. Hannah can as well, support with potential funding for grants through their volunteer scheme. They have the Digital Wings website that offers Digital and financial skills.

They have the Life Skills Website that focuses on identifying transferable skills, confidence boosting, money skills, virtual interviews/cv etc. All services are free.

Attended the Step Into Spring Event organised by the Marine Medical SP’s – It was held and the Blyth central Family Hub (Bernicia, HealthWatch, Boxing Well, Blyth Food Bank, Kate’s Place, NHS Breast Awareness and Sexual Health, Carers Northumberland, Blyth Fibromyalgia support Group, Heart of Blyth). Had a catch up with the organisations and groups present, Met the Kate’s Place support group and referred them to sign up to Frontline. I have been building a good relationship with Janey and Dawn (SP’s for Marine Medical) and have given them several contacts for funding for the Christmas meal they are organising.

Lynemouth Drop In

Richard Shrimpton, BID, NCC health trainer and Bacmans were in attendance. Only 2 people came into the drop in. One of them was the Lynemouth Vicar Rev Julia Lacey, she was looking for some advice to assist some people that sought her advice (family with autistic children and one woman that is having trouble finding a job that is flexible with her childcare duties). I gave her a Frontline leaflet and other organisations leaflets that might be helpful for the people seeking her help.

Maria, had the chance to drop in at Boxing Well in Blyth earlier this week and check out one of their Community Fitness Classes. All their classes are free, and it’s clear they’re making a positive impact on the local community. Referrals come from places like social prescribers, GPs, physiotherapists, and the Northumberland Recovery College. Les, one of the coaches, mentioned that many people continue their recovery journey with Boxing Well after finishing their NHS pathways.

They support a range of individuals, including:
👉 Cancer patients needing to lose weight before surgery
👉 People recovering from cancer
👉 Those with Parkinson’s disease
👉 Individuals with back and knee problems
👉 People with autism who gradually build confidence and social connections
👉 Those starting physically demanding jobs who want to get in better shape

It was great to see people of all ages enjoying the session and benefiting from the positive atmosphere. Boxing Well is a fantastic way to improve both physical and mental well-being, reduce loneliness, and support the NHS and social care services. If you’re in Blyth and looking for a supportive fitness community, definitely check them out!
